I talk a lot about making extra money and how to make extra money here on Making Sense of Cents.  I do this because I truly believe that learning about the ways to make extra money and making extra income can change a person’s life.

After all, making extra money changed my life.

Around five years ago, I was fresh out of college and stressing out about my student loans. I was also not too happy about how much money I was spending and I was not too happy about how much money I was not saving.

Then, a few years ago everything changed when I learned all about side jobs and the different things a person can do to make extra money.

Making extra money can change your life in ways such as:

  • It may help you pay off your debt;
  • It may help you save for things such as a vacation;
  • It may help you stop living paycheck to paycheck;
  • It may help you reach retirement sooner;
  • It may help you not feel as stuck at your job;
  • It may help you to become more diversified.

Whether you have just one free hour each day or if you are willing to work 40 to 50 hours a week on top of your full-time job, there are many options for you when it comes to the different ways to earn extra money.

      It’s funny you say that!

I had a side business on etsy of making chocolate lollipops. i started in 2011. it was fun and it really helped out. i was so busy. then i bought a house. i became so busy with running a house and having a child that i started to dread having to create a lollipop order.

there also became too much competition. so i have dropped out of that business. i wasn’t making enough to make it worthwhile anymore.

i hope i think of something soon.

      1. I have just recently started ghost writing blog posts for another blog owner. I’m not getting rich off of it, but it is easy work to do and very flexible. I found the offer on UpWork.com. It definitely is flexible as I have a full-time job and babysit my niece on the side in addition to this! Check it out!

    3. sabina edwards

PLUS the fact that you usually have to be bonded for a lot of the really good cleaning jobs (in my tiny town it would be the post office and the banks, which pay a flat rate, but all of them require you being bonded)

  2. So many ideas, so little time!

I’ve always thought it would be fun to be an extra: no lines to learn, you get to hang around and watch all the action AND you paid.

I like the idea of renting stuff out because you buy it once and, in essence, get to sell it again and again. I’ll be looking into that idea…

    Thanks Michelle!

  3. This list proves that there are really ways to make extra income and anyone can do and earn money. Of all the 75 and aside from I love blogging, I’d love to invest and sell items on Ebay. Thanks Michelle. I have additional 75 ways to earn extra, I can’t wait to do most of them.

    1. Thanks! People always tell me that they can’t do anything to make extra money. I’m sure there is something on this list for everyone!

  4. Good tips Michelle! Blogging is still my No. 1 way to earn an extra income on the side. Easily $1-$2k per month on top of our regular jobs.

      1. Mollie

I really liked this post too! Fab tips!

    1. Christa Hindman

Hello ladies! I love writing myself, have had great reviews of my work in the past, am very artsy & crafty/creative & frequent social media on the daily & have been thinking lately about starting my own blog.my question to you both is how long did it take you to start earning decent amounts of money?

  5. Amy @ DebtGal

Lots of great ideas here! I teach classes on resume writing and interview prep a couple of times a year, and periodically take surveys.

  6. I feel like I have done half of these things at one point or another! You do what you have to do sometimes =)

  7. Natalie @ Financegirl

I think you covered everything here, Michelle! Quite a comprehensive list and will no doubt help people find something that works for them. I really like your point about how making more money can change your life. I truly believe this, particularly because it can help you get out of debt.

  8. Thanks for these great tips Michelle, you are really incredible! I still do prefer being a virtual assistant and also having a garage sale too!

  9. Great ideas! I’m definitely bookmarking this! Right now I’m freelance writing to make extra money but I’d love to monetize my blog soon and start earning side income away from the computer by walking dogs or baking for people’s events etc.

  10. Great job on making $1,700 a month from your website!

  11. Love this! I have a notebook going with a ton of ideas like this, but was waiting to hit 100 before I published it. Good idea to do 75!! Will pin and stumble. 🙂

    1. Yeah I tried to get to 100 but it was hard! 🙂

  12. Sarah

This is a great list. I work as a substitute teacher (I consider being a SAHM my day job) and I’ve just started down the blogging path. I will have to look into Ubertesting.com, that sounds like something I might enjoy.

  13. I’ve done a few on that list. My side income fluctuates. It is definitely growing.

  14. What a comprehensive list! There’s really no shortage of things you can do for money these days, especially online work. I like to vary my tasks so I get to do a bit of everything, even though it’s my job and not a side hustle. Editing posts, creating graphics for Pinterest, writing, social media management…lots of opportunities!

  15. Thanks for a couple of new ideas. I’m obsessed with earning extra little bits of money, especially right now, while on maternity leave. I receive my paycheck, but have some extra chunks of time here and there. I’ve been trying to use this opportunity to make extra progress paying off debt.

Also, I came up with a few of my own ideas to make money: http://creatingmykaleidoscope.com/2015/01/28/new-ways-that-were-going-to-make-money-this-year/

  16. Lixen

Hi Michelle!! Thank you very much for sha ring these tips, I followed you a couple of day ago and now your my inspiration and I wanted to start making extra money, I have entered in surveys websites and they asked me to pay to register, sounds a bit crazy to me or more of a scam, so here goes my question do you know any survey website that didn’t ask for money to start.

    1. Survey websites should never ask you to pay. That definitely sounds like a scam. The only survey website I’ve used is Pinecone Research.

  17. Kate @ Cashville Skyline

Right on, Michelle! Love seeing so many ways to side hustle. There’s always someone willing to pay you to give them more free time, you just need to connect with those people.

  18. Nice list Michelle! I make some money blogging, but honestly have put about 1/2 the time in it recently that I used to. I think side hustles are great but it’s very important to be realistic about your time commitments and how much time and energy you can commit to a side hustle.

  19. Kim

I always love to see these lists because it proves there is something for everyone if you are motivated to take advantage The other nice thing about side income is that you can work really hard for a period of time, then take time off and not have to worry about money. I’m planning to take off most of July, which is amazing to think about. I would have never thought it possible a few years ago.

    1. Yes, there is something for everyone!

  20. Crystal

I’ve turned dog walking and pet sitting into a $2000-$3000 a month business in about a year. 🙂

  21. Mildly Moody

Great post idea! One of my goals is to make money off my blog one day too! Just started last week though, so im sure I have a ways to go!

    Now following you!
    Xoxo, Cori

    1. Hello! One thing I recommend is switching your blog to self-hosted WordPress. You can read why here – https://www.makingsenseofcents.com/2014/08/how-to-start-a-wordpress-blog-on-bluehost.html

  22. Wow, what a list! Great ideas and everyone should be able to find something on here they could do for extra cash.

Saving money and cutting costs will certainly help your finances, but to really get ahead, making extra cash is key!

  23. I love when people get extra jobs to pay down debt or invest in retirement! I prefer the online method through blogging and paid writing gigs. I started my blog to teach others about money and productivity and to earn some money. Since I’ve started it, I’ve found my love for writing! win-win.

  24. Michelle

Great list! Writing and editing are on my list of side hustles. I tried the photography thing and am working to get it started again. Takes time and lots of effort, but I’m not stranger to hard work!

  25. Elizabeth

    Great list, thanks! 🙂

  26. im so glad I found your site! This is great inspiration! No excuses… Time to make money! I have pinned and tweeted this – and will follow you!

  27. Zascha

Great tips and ideas as usual, Michelle! 🙂

  28. Pam Baker

Love how varied and interesting this list is! There is definitely something for everybody

  29. Bill Wayne

This is a great post. Alot of ideas and i was really suprised howone could earn using their hidden skills.

  30. Fantastic list!!! I have a very similar one in draft form from a staff writer that I still haven’t finished editing. There are just SO many ways to add a few bucks to your bottom line!

  31. Amy

These are all very good tips Michelle. Thanks for sharing! I appreciate how well organized your list is too. Often it is hard to find content that is informative and well organized. Keep up the good work!

  32. Mark

This makes a lot of sense. I’ve always been finding ways to make side income. This is a great tutorial!

  33. I’m catching up on blog commenting (finally!) and have to tell you that I wouldn’t have pursued side hustles if it weren’t for your blog. Now I make extra income in a variety of ways (all on your list of course) including selling on Etsy, various small ways through my blog, SwagBucks, medical studies (which I do to support cure research for type 1 diabetes, not for the money) and Ebates. I also seized an opportunity that has me making an extra $500 or so tweeting for an organization that I love.

  34. I love your optimism. Anyone can make extra money if they put their mind to it. One thing I am going to start doing is selling things on ebay or craigslist. We have several new items that we received as gifts that we haven’t ever used.

  35. Carrie

    michelle,

Your situation sounds very similar to mine. Student loans will be the life of me!! I’m not much of a writer but this intrigues me to become a blogger. I am curious on how you actually make your monthly income by just simply blogging?

  36. I would be careful with Nielsen. I installed their software exactly as asked. Within hours, my computer started having issues re-starting and by the next day, it stopped working altogether. I’m not the only one who experienced issues, as I found out after Googling. Some have no issues and others have tons, so just a word of caution 🙂

  37. LeighAnne

I love this list! So motivating, and way beyond the typical idea of “sell so much stuff that your kids think they’re next.” 🙂 My question is about #38, editing ~ how does one get started doing this? I love to write on occasion, but I fear that I wouldn’t have enough to say to keep a blog going. However, I confess to being a grammar/spelling freak, and sometimes it feels like a curse because of the distraction it causes. I’d be interested in your suggestions.

    1. Hello!

There are numerous sites and groups out there that help others find editing jobs. The “easiest” and most known way that I know of others getting into editing roles is by blogging first. Then, clients can find you that way.

  38. rajee

    Lot of things to do

  39. Vanna Lindholm

    Housesitting sound nice,
do you have idea how to find customers for this service?
I would like to try but don’t have clue how to find first customers,
    thanks

  40. Katy

Hi, Michelle! I’ve done a couple of these things…I was an extra in a movie YEARS ago (it was Varsity Blues…so yeah, it’s been awhile!) I really just did that for fun – I did get paid though. More recently, I’ve done some editorial work for an author friendfor which I did NOT get paid. It was more of a favor in exchange for getting to read her trilogy early. I also use Viggle and though I’ve only had it for a few days, I like it. In fact, I used some of my points to buy a song this morning! Unfortunately it seems they don’t offer gift cards like they used to but they DO have books, audiobooks and music; all of which I like!

  41. Ellie

Its always good to read through a list like this – gives me plenty of ideas to pursue! Mostly i do online earning from various sites and blog about my experiences and research into them to help people avoid scams. Your post gave me a few new ones to check out!

  42. I recently had a friend who got involved with TaskRabbit.com. It’s a site that hooks side hustlers up with people who need various tasks done, such as grocery shopping or standing in line at the post office.

The only downsides are that they only offer the orientation webinar once a month and just like other services (Uber, Lyft) there aren’t as many jobs available if you aren’t in a major urban area.

  43. Rohan

its an exact piece of article which i had been searching on i just stumbled on this website through mathewwoodward.co.uk and all 75 ways are most appropriate to start on but why i dont know peoples are more likely to beg instead of working…………Michelle i really appreciate your research on this and keep blogging similar article have a good day 🙂

  44. Such good ideas! We’re saving for a house, so I need to start some of these!

  45. Serra

I am only 17 years old and i dont know how i can make money with my limited resources.

  46. Jenny

I do a paid for surveys site and I make around $300 a month. It won’t make you rich but it covers my electric and water bill lol. It’s really not hard.

  47. Finance Guy

Im earning extra money two ways…

    1) Better and Tighter budgeting. Thats right saving a dollar is just as beneficial as making a dollar.

    2) I lend money to folks who would otherwise have trouble obtaining a loan. I know it sounds risky and well I suppose it is. But the secret is to take advantage of local and personal factors that don’t exist in typical loan agreements. for example I have a loan investment that is two weeks old and worth 2700 today that has already yielded or paid 400 and is secured by a car title. This loan cost me 2655 initially and should be paid off with in 10 weeks. so 12 weeks total. annually that is over a 50% return i think. I know the borrowers situation. what he does, how much he gets paid, and his overall intentions.

I use to think giving folks credit card consolidation loans at like 12-13 percent interest plus maybe a little processing fee would be a good idea but what I found out through researching the idea is that folks who take those loans often start out with the best intentions but end up eventually falling prey to the temptation to start spending money via the credit cards they just paid off wth a loan. before you know it they are in twice as much debt as before.

    1. Looking for Side Money

Just a quick question to help myself, and others, understand your math here. You state you have a loan valued at $2700 and that it cost you $2655. That makes it sound like you’re making $45 interest, which I know can’t be correct. To simplify everything, how much did you loan out to this person in total and what is the agreed amount to be paid back? Also, how do you handle the collateral situation without some type of escrow company involved? Lastly, with the very strict and very numerous regulations that surround all financial industries and the regulations on the instruments / products they sell and provide, is all of this above board, legally? I wouldn’t want to have to take someone to small-claims court and then get burned because it wasn’t a legal transaction to begin with. Thanks for answering any of these that you can!

  48. Desi Vick

Like the list! I am trying out the UserTesting, I installed the program, but when it comes to record my sample video, it’s saying it doesn’t hear my sample recording. I don’t have an external microphone and am wondering if/where the internal microphone is on the computer? Sorry, I’m not tech savvy at all! Is there an internal microphone on the computer or do I need to get an external one and plug it in??

  49. Faizan

How much time your website has taken to reach $1,700 level?

  50. Erin

I know people always say that they can make extra money taking surveys, but I’ve never been successful with it. It seems I’m either not qualified for most of the surveys or I don’t actually get rewarded for the surveys I do take. Has anyone ever actually been successful with online survey taking? And how much can you actually make doing them!?

    1. Danielle

I’ve made mere cents from the minimal amount of surveys I actually qualified for. And it took forever! So, my personal experience has not been nearly as succesful. It seems that the surveyors want specifics that I do not possess- I’m in the wrong profession, not the age or gender the survey needs to draw from, & my own personal interests/ hobbies aren’t ones that matter, apparently!! Good luck

      1. Michele

I’ve been doing surveys off and on for probably 20 years now. It’s definitely not a big money making thing, and many of the companies I did okay with are no longer around. However, I have typically done them in downtime when I’m waiting for something to cook in the oven, or while I’m watching a TV show that doesn’t require my full attention. There are only two places I still do surveys – eRewards and Mypoints. Mypoints is similar to other cash back/points sites when purchasing items online (i.e. 3 points per dollar) that will add up. But they also have surveys available and will send daily emails with an ad or offer (such as for Walmart….get 5 points just for clicking…get 4 points per dollar on any purchase). Often I just go through and click on the ones offering 5 points. Brings up the stores website and then I click out. Still get credit for it and that adds up. I’ve gotten lots of gift cards with the points. HOWEVER, I do recommend a separate/dedicated email address for mypoints or any other survey sites because you may end up with 5-10 emails every couple of days or more. I don’t like it getting mixed with personal emails.

  51. Tyler @ Oddball Wealth

A lot great ideas here on ways to make extra income – I especially like the idea of placing advertisements on your car. You’re driving around anyways, why not make some cash at the same time!

    1. Danielle E.

Just don’t pay anything to get it on there unless you live in NY or LA.

  52. Daniel Palmer

TONS of great suggestions here- lots of ones I hadn’t heard of/thought of before!

    1. Bob

      For Sure !

    2. Wealth

please can somebody explain how this thing works for me i’ve been trying this out to make money over a year now online

  53. Pancake Presents

This is a really great list! Thanks so much for sharing! I also wanted to add that you can make money on zazzle.com if you have any graphic design skills or any funny sayings you can make tshirts and other products and post them for sale there. I’ve been doing it for maybe 4 years or so and I’ve made about $33,000 over that time period. Thanks again!

  54. James

Nice work on this series, Pete and staff. Obviously you’ve engaged the readers and are “getting the juices flowing”. Once thing I struggle with is picking an idea and sticking to it. I guess you can use a combination of things, but I struggle with prioritizing my efforts. It would be good to explore methods for helping you prioritize and be consistent.

  55. Emm

Great advice, I focus on reselling pre-owned items on ebay and I have grown my online store into a significant income source each month.

  56. Hi Michelle

Found your site through side hustle nation, loved the guest post you did over there. I was just perusing through your website when I came across this gem of an article.
I am always looking to make some extra income and this list has given me a few ideas
    Thank you.

  57. Great Tips! Such a great information.

I agree with you that ”After all, making extra money changed my life.” I have always been facing problems with the 75+ Ways To Make Extra Money and was trying to hire someone to help me.

I will tweet your post. Thanks a lot for sharing.

    Thanks a lot!

    Stefan

  58. Teni

Hi Michelle, this message is coming from Nigeria. You are truly a rare gem and you are a godsend. I have been in a rut for months now battling with depression and trying to pick myself up and your blog inspired me to set up my own blog in order to share my story and my journey to recovery. I tell people about you a lot and about how you have changed my life. In just under a week that I resumed blogging I made $150/N50,000 all thanks to you. Thanks so much. I am your biggest fan in Nigeria. I hope I can somehow return the favor one day. Bless you.

  59. DNN

Affiliate marketing and Internet side hustles are the new new of making money online and working from home while building up your financial net worth in secrecy. This is why I love the Internet because it provides a meaningful avenue for people to better their financial health.

  60. Thanks for posting this! I love completing surveys and using cash back systems like Ebates and Swagbucks. With the holidays coming up, people could really benefit from this type of article!

  61. Wow this is a long list. There are definitely a few gems on this list I will be trying in the near future. Especially being an virtual assistant that seems very promising.

    1. Ruth Adongo

Your ideas are inspiring! I will like to get involve and make some cash for my self. Thanks

  62. This is an exhaustive list! Must have taken forever to come up with all these ideas, let alone to write them! Awesome post 🙂

  63. Dayna

Great article! I’m always looking for new ways to make extra money.

  64. Allison

Lots of great ideas! Your site is great!

  65. Great content! Keep up the good work!

  66. Efoghor Joseph

    Quite a comprehensive list.
Let me quickly say that everyone needs to find out what he can do conveniently and not necessarily following others because they are successful in a particular niche.
I tried the blogging niche and struggled for years without making anything tangible until I ventured into affiliate marketing. Now my affiliate blog is earning passive income for me, though not yet a super earner.
Try your hands on a few things until you are able to discover what works for you. Once discovered, stick with it and you are sure to make money from it.

  67. It’s always a beautiful thing in my personal opinion when people discover virtually unlimited ways to make money online potentially 24 hours a day. We didn’t have this type of opportunity growing up. The internet wasn’t into full swing yet. And side hustling wasn’t completely in fruition.

Going forward, I’m so happy there’s unlimited ways of virtually to make money online 24 hours a day. Looking forward to sharing this post on the blog income reports forum and referring my readers to check out what you have to say. Love your blogs! 🙂

  68. Jonathan

There are a lot of very interesting and fresh ideas in here. I didn’t know you could rent out your car and I wonder what are the areas where you can do this – will have to research it more. I also remembered I have some old books that are just sitting there so will probably sell some soon.

On another note, although this is not something that can make money fast, what is your opinion on cryptocurrencies? I think that if you invest 5-10% of your income and are ready to wait 2-3 years, you can make a good ROI. I would also invest in a few altcoins and not just in Bitcoin. Would buy new coins monthly and only invest money I am willing to lose and I am willing to wait on for profits.

    1. PK
