Mim has taught over 2,500 people how to make stickers from home.

How to sell stickers on Etsy.

1. Please give us a little background on yourself and how you got started selling stickers from home.

Hi, I’m Mim Jenkinson! I’m a mother of two and we live in Australia – although originally I am from the UK. My biggest passions include planning and using stickers to stay calm and organized!

In 2016, I started to make my own planner stickers and loved the whole process from coming up with designs for the stickers to printing and cutting them myself. Not only did it save me money on my (quite expensive!) sticker-buying habit, it also gave me a great new creative hobby too.

This was just after I had been diagnosed with breast cancer – and this new hobby gave me a fun focus during chemo.

I decided to start selling my stickers and built an Etsy shop from scratch – soon, my stickers were selling to people all over the world! Being able to make an income from my hobby has really helped pay my medical bills at the time and my shop has continued to grow since then.

After a while, my customers started to ask me how I was making my stickers, such as the tools and software I was using, how I came up with the designs, what sticker paper and printer I used and more. It inspired me to create a course to share all of this knowledge and help other new sticker makers to take the faster route to learning how to make them from home. I WISH I’d had this knowledge when I got started.

My course sold well and many of my students began to ask me for help with setting up their Etsy shop so they could sell the stickers they’d made too. This inspired me to grow my course and “The Etsy Plan” was born! It’s the fastest, most comprehensive way to learn how to make stickers from scratch that stand out and sell and I’ll tell you more about that later!

2. Can you explain this side hustle to someone who is brand new? What are you selling, are you shipping items, how much do they cost, etc.?

I have sold both printed and printable stickers in my Etsy shop and on my website. For the printed stickers, I printed and cut them from home, packaged them well and posted them to customers all over the world. I was always complimented on my designs, how quickly I shipped them and the quality of my sticker paper – as well as my customer service.

Soon, I started to sell printable versions of my stickers and this added a great passive income stream to my business. I create stickers, list them in my Etsy shop once and they can sell for years to come!

My stickers start at around $2 and I have bundles at around the $50 mark too so it really varies.

For a brand new sticker shop, there are a few costs to outlay in the beginning to consider – as well as some ongoing costs. These include purchasing a cutting machine, a printer, sticker paper and ink. Then there are accessories and other small costs to bear in mind like replacing cutting machine blades, cutting mats, buying graphics etc. Many of my students already have many of these things e.g. they might have had a Silhouette or Cricut cutting machine gathering dust on the shelf. They’ve told me that joining my course has given them the chance to finally put the machine to use!

For new sellers who are on a budget, you can always find great quality second-hand printers or cutting machines and upgrade later (if needed).

Bear in mind too that Etsy charges some fees to use its platform such as a renewable 20c listing fee for every product you list to sell. When you sell a product, there will also be shipping fees and other small transaction fees. I encourage and teach my students to ensure that they are always focusing on profit – so they are making more money each month than they are spending on running their business.

3. How much do you earn monthly from Etsy by selling stickers?

My monthly income is now made up of my Etsy shop sales, website sales and the revenue I earn from teaching and coaching, selling courses, my memberships and some other digital products.

Each year, my income has grown and is now at the multiple six-figure mark this year. I’ll always be so grateful that my business has allowed me to spend more time with my two children, my husband and focus on rebuilding my health both physically and mentally.

4. What exactly is a sticker used for? Who buys them?

My speciality is planner stickers – although I also make stickers for home organization, business, my kids and more.

Planner stickers come in so many different shapes and sizes and they’re used for numerous reasons too. Many of my customers use stickers to decorate their planner, to help them be more organized and as a form of self-care and therapy. I personally love my weekly ritual of using stickers in my planner.

Stickers are sold either as printed stickers, printables or digital stickers – and some shops offer all of these.

My customers are predominantly women, and many are mothers and grandmothers. All share my love for the therapy and ritual of using stickers to be creative and more organized.

5. What do you like about selling on Etsy?

So much! I really love the huge difference that my stickers make in the lives of my customers. My Etsy shop has had hundreds of 5-star reviews where my customers have complimented my products and my customer service. I get so excited when customers share images of them using my stickers in their planners or around the home.

Additionally, I love the creativity and self-care I’ve built into my own life by using and making stickers and seeing the impact they have on others too.

My Etsy business, and teaching others to make and sell stickers, has given me the opportunity to run my own business from home. This is something I always wanted to do but I didn’t know how to make it possible. I never would have guessed it might come from making stickers!

Etsy is a wonderful platform to sell on and I’m always helping my students find new ways to help their new shop stand out from others.

is selling stickers on etsy worth it

6. How much money can you make selling stickers?

This varies depending on the kind of stickers you’re making, how unique they are, how much time and effort you put into building your business and more. I know many sellers whose full-time income has been replaced by their Etsy shop income.

As mentioned before, I personally make multiple 6-figures a year and this is from a combination of selling my range of stickers and planners as well as my courses and programs.

For anyone interested in learning more about my 3-step method to creating stickers that stand out on Etsy, you can watch my free 60-minute masterclass here. This is a GREAT starting point for new sticker makers to watch before you even open your Etsy shop – so you can have a proven plan in place to make unique stickers that stand out, build a profit-focused Etsy shop and attract loyal customers.

7. Do I need to already have a following to make money selling stickers? How do I find customers?

It isn’t essential to already have a following or blog – although of course those things can sometimes help.

I teach my students how to come up with ideas for products that customers WANT to buy – so they’re not creating ones that people don’t want or where there is already a lot of competition.

I also work with them to list their products on Etsy in a way that will help them be found by customers who are looking to buy stickers.

I’ve found that the more products I sell, my following increases. I build my Etsy shop following from scratch and I share how in my course, The Etsy Plan. I have 20+ years of experience in sales, marketing and promotion and this has really helped me find ways to stand out from the crowd.

It’s essential to learn the right ways to promote your products, learn how to do SEO and not just do the same as everyone else. In my free class on Creating Stickers That Sell, I share my expert tips on how to come up with ideas for stickers that focus on helping people and standing out from the crowd – not blending in!

The Etsy market is competitive, but not saturated for shop owners who are committed to making products that stand out from the crowd, are unique and in finding new and effective ways to promote their products. For shop owners who don’t take the time to come up with original ideas, find new customers and promote, the chances of success are much lower. I’m always sharing new ideas and trends with my students to inspire them to stand out and be successful and profitable!

8. How do I come up with new ideas for stickers to sell?

One of the challenges I have is that I have SO many ideas and have to limit the ones I plough ahead with! I find it easy to come up with new ideas for stickers because I focus on how they will help people – I’m not just creating them because it’s something I would use myself.

I literally go about my life wondering if I could use stickers as a solution for the challenges I see others having!

As long as we focus on helping other people find a solution for a challenge they are facing, we will be able to come up with plenty of ideas for products that people will want.

9. Can someone with no tech skills create a sticker?  What tools do I need?

Absolutely! I had no graphic design skills when I got started making stickers and I’ve taught myself everything I know – and now teach all of this in my courses.

To get started, you’ll need a computer, reasonable internet connection, ideally a cutting machine and sticker paper. I teach my students where to find artwork, patterns and designs to use in their sticker designs if they’re not able to draw themselves.

The great thing about making stickers is that it can uncover a creative side that we often don’t think we have until we get started!

The tech skills can be overwhelming without help, which is one of the biggest reasons I started sharing my knowledge on what WORKS with others. I didn’t want anyone else to have to stumble around and make tech mistakes like I did in the early days.

10. Can you list the steps needed to get started selling stickers from home?

A great place to start is my free 60-minute masterclass because this will give you inspiration on the kind of stickers you might create and your next steps to get started.

When you’re sure it’s a path you’d like to take, I recommend joining The Etsy Plan where you could be up and running making your own stickers in just a few hours!

In this course, I break down the steps in very easy-to-follow, bite-sized videos and the lessons build on each other as you progress through the course. They start for total newbies – so don’t worry if you’ve never done this before.

I love to use the Silhouette Studio software and there’s a great free version too. In my course, I teach both Silhouette Studio and Cricut Design Space – so you can choose which you would prefer to use. Many of my students with Cricut cutting machines still like to design their stickers in Silhouette Studio and then transfer their designs into Cricut to print and cut there. I teach the easy steps to do this

The Etsy Plan is great for anyone who wants the fast and easy way to make beautiful, made-to-measure planner stickers without being overwhelmed by the tech. If you own a Silhouette or Cricut cutting machine already, even better! Although if you’re making stickers for yourself, you can cut them by hand of with a craft knife otherwise.

Whether you take my course or teach yourself, you will love the process of making stickers that others want to buy and this could be a great way for you to make extra income from home.

  1. Etsy is such a phenomenal platform to sell stuff in!

Used to sell digital downloadable on Etsy and realized that platform is great due to its built-in SEO and its already having a large audience. Since I’ve come from more of a paid ads background, Etsy’s ability to organically promote great products with a good SEO plan was a wonderful surprise for me as I didn’t really have to worry about ad cost-per-acquisition costs.

Selling stickers on Etsy is a great idea and I’ve never even considered it! Thanks so much for this interview and resource!

    1. Does Etsy allow you to have clickable hyperlinks pointing to blogs and websites inside your Etsy product descriptions? Can you use Etsy to improve SEO for a blog, website or increase subscribers to a YouTube channel?

      1. Hi, you can use Etsy to improve your SEO for a blog or website since it has a high domain authority via its hyperlink (through your own listings).

Though I’m not sure if it’ll boost SEO for YouTube as well, or if it would only do so for search engines only. It doesn’t hurt to try, say VidIQ to get keyword ideas + the method you described.

  2. The great thing about Etsy also is that if you’re new to the game, it’s relatively inexpensive to promote your listings via Etsy ads. You can start promoting with as little as $1 per day.

  3. Rocco Carbone

I have an inventory of stickers that I created and would like to sell. The stickers are stored in containers waiting to get them in public eye. How do I promote and sell them on Etsy?
I have had these for three years now and am stuck as to how to get them promoted and sold.

    Thank You,

  5. I have been thinking to sell stickers on Etsy after having a bit of success with templates so it gave me courage, but I only need to learn how to make the stickers. Is a very rewarding business though …
